Varsity Head Coach
Jim Koltes has much to celebrate as a coach, mentor, and educator. 2024 marks 29 years as a District 279 Health and Physical Education teacher, 28 years coaching high school softball, and 29 years coaching hockey. Coach Koltes has spent 24 years as Head Varsity Softball Coach at MGHS and finished his 4th year as the MGHS Girls Hockey Varsity Coach. He is proud to be a part of the MGHS softball program and share in the many successes, as they have won the NWSC title 7 times, have been to the state tournament 9 times (4 times playing in the state championship), and have a 2019 State Championship win.
In addition to coaching MGSH softball, Jim spent 4 years as the 9th grade head coach at Northview Junior High School. During the summer months, Coach Koltes enjoys umpiring games, and for the past 8 years has coached the Midwest Speed softball club program.
Born in St. Paul, MN, Koltes attended Robbinsdale/Armstrong High School and graduated from St. Cloud State University. Jim is married to Becky. Their son, Ian, graduated from UND and their daughter, Cate, is in her senior year at Champlin Park High School. Coach Koltes’ favorite song is Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. Koltes admits, “It is the one thing I can guarantee in this life that if I am at an event with my wife and this song comes on, she will find me and want to dance. I love that I can always count on it.
Varsity Assistant Coach
Pam Hennen is the MGHS Assistant Varsity Softball Coach and retired (2020) MGHS Biology Teacher. Coach Hennen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and attended Robbinsdale High School. She made history by being the leadoff batter on the first-ever Robbinsdale High School softball team…and struck out.
Pam went on to play college softball at North Hennepin and Mankato State. She has coached 41 years of softball, 12 years as a head cross country coach, and an assortment of junior high sports. Prior to coaching at MGSH, she coached at Park Center High School for 14 seasons, winning 7 section championships and building the first softball field in the conference that had dugouts.
In 2010 Coach Hennen was inducted into the Minnesota High School Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and is a National Girls and Women in Sports Breaking Barriers Award Winner. Coach Hennen enjoys running, fitness and paddling on a Dragon Boat racing team.
Varsity Assistant Coach
Kurt Maus is the Assistant Varsity Softball Coach at MGHS and a Physical Education teacher at MGMS. Coach Maus was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, attended Park Center High School and graduated from Mankato State University. He has 37 years of coaching experience at the high school level coaching boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, and of course softball.
Kurt is married to his wife, Patty and they have 2 children (Blake and Haley). Fun fact! Coach Maus’s daughter is the Maple Grove Crimson B-Squad Coach. In his free time, Coach Maus enjoys the outdoors, especially at his cabin up near Garrison MN!
Coach Maus can’t help but sing along with the Toby Keith hit “How do you like me now” and Blake Shelton’s “Ol Red”!
JV Head Coach
Joe Head is the MGHS JV Head Coach. He has coached 19 years of softball (MGHS and Midwest Speed), 24 years of hockey (Park Center High School, Champlin Park High School, and currently MGHS JV Girls Hockey Coach), and 11 years coaching football at Osseo High School. Coach Head attended Park Center High School and graduated from the University of Minnesota.
He is married to his wife, Gwen. They have two dogs, Ozzie and Lucy.
JV Assistant Coach
Nick Schroeder is the MGHS Assistant JV Coach. Coach Schroeder was born in Ames, Iowa, but grew up in the Plymouth/Maple Grove area and is a MGHS Health and Physical Education teacher. He has served the Maple Grove Senior High School community as a high school softball coach for the past 7 years, 15 years as Head Varsity Basketball coach, and 17 years as MGSH Freshman Football Coach.
Coach Schroeder’s favorite song is Encore.
B Squad Head Coach
Haley Walters is the MGHS B-Squad Head Coach. This is coach Walter’s 5th year with the MGHS softball program. She also coaches the MGHS 9B girls basketball team and is an Adapted PE teacher in the Anoka Hennepin School District. Coach Walters grew up in Champlin and graduated from Champlin Park High School in 2015 where she played basketball, softball, and volleyball. She then went on to graduate from Winona State University with a teaching degree in Elementary Education, Physical Education, and Adapted Physical Education.
Coach Walters lives in Champlin with her husband, Jacob. Her favorite song is Mayberry by Rascal Flatts.
B Squad Assistant Coach
Malorie Wall is the A/B Coach in her 3rd year of coaching softball. She was born in Galesville, Wisconsin and played softball in high school. Coach Wall graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and is a 4th grade teacher in District 279.

9A Head Coach
Joey Simon is the 9A/B Coach. He has coached both girls hockey and girls softball for 5 years. Coach Simon was born in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota and attended St. Cloud State University. He is a Physical Education teacher.
Coach Simon will sing along to Toby Keith’s hit Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue.
9A Assistant Coach
Sean O’Toole is returning for a 4th year as a volunteer assistant 9 A/B team coach. He was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Prior to coming to Maple Grove, he spent 23 years coaching baseball at Cooper High School. After high school, Coach O'Toole joined The United States Marine Corps and was Stationed in 29 Palms California for 4 years. Coach O'Toole currently works at Cooper High School in a Support/Security position and drives the zamboni at New Hope Ice Arena in his spare time.
Coach O’Toole loves to sing along to Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. He also jams out to Daylight by Shinedown or Still by Dierks Bentley to refocus mentally. He enters his 26th season of coaching a spring sport.
